Message From Martha & Thad

Sally Ride

Martha attended a luncheon last month where Dr. Sally Ride was part of a roundtable discussion about gender equity in math and science education.  For any of you that have daughters, you would have enjoyed the information discussed by Sally and the other panelist about setting expectations for educators, parents and their daughters around math and science at a very early age.  One story Sally shared was about a young girl that attended a Sally Ride Science camp.  On the last day, the young girl approached Sally with her final project…all smiles, with her mother in tow.  Her mom stated, “You know, her dad and I never thought she could do a project like this, because none of her sisters could!”  We have to believe that “mom” had no idea of the message she sent to her daughter by saying that one sentence…like you are not like your sisters, you are different, you are weird.

Leadership Quick Tip:

Technology hasn’t done much to close a critical leadership information GAP.

Listen to Sally Ride, first American woman in space, and one of “America’s Best Leaders 2009,” according to U. S. News & World Report.

U. S. News asked her, “What are the qualities that characterize a good leader?”

Interestingly, two of the four qualities she mentions deal directly with LISTENING.

  1. Willingness to listen
  2. An appreciation for the importance of teamwork
  3. Knowing when to lead that team and when to listen to the other members of the team
  4. Being decisive when decisions are required but to deliberate appropriately while making those decisions

Why does Sally Ride put so much emphasis on listening?
Why do leaders often shy away from listening?
How can you make listening work for you?
